In 1886, Karl Benz invented the first internal combustion engine with horizontally opposed pistons. This boxer engine, is a design with multiple pistons, moving in the horizontal plane.

The most popular layout has cylinders arranged in two banks on either side of a single crankshaft, also known as boxers.
