These two very different cars with a completely different attitude The American icon C7 stingray faces the precise hybrid i8
You may want to call this one before it even starts, but hold on; more muscle doesn’t always necessarily equate to dragstrip victory.
We get to watch a drag race between the premier champion of Bavarian auto tech the BMW i8 and the hallmark of American sports cars: the 2015 convertible Corvette Stingray.
The 2015 Chevrolet Corvette C7 Stingray has the eight-speed automatic transmission (allegedly faster-shifting than even Porsche’s dual-clutchPDK), and all 460 horses that come packed into the 6.2L LT1 V8. The BMW i8 has a punchy little electric motor to power the front wheels, putting down 131 horsepower (and more impressively, an awesome 184 lb-ft of torque), and a 231 horsepower three-cylinder to propel the back.
What we have here is a much more powerful internal combustion engine in a classic FR layout, versus less power, supplemented by the aids of all-wheel drive, motor weight over both axles, and the instantaneous high torque that comes with utilizing an electric motor. Talk about your apples and oranges comparisons.
The result? Yeah, the mighty Corvette conquers the futuristic i8. But the two are closer than you’d think.
One has a conventional V8 while the other utilizes a combination of gasoline and lithium-ion to generate its power. Various other publications have already tested the i8 and walked away convinced that it is a true sports car. But in a drag race? Well, we’ll just have to wait and see.
Some rightly question the pure sports car abilities of the new BMW i8. After all, it is a plug-in hybrid, but BMW is out to prove that this power-train setup can be the future of the segment. With growing global emissions regulations, that very well may end up being the case.No matter, we’re not there yet. And today someone has finally organized the drag race we’ve been waiting to see: a 2015 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray against a BMW i8. But are these two really even competitors?
