A few weeks ago Mazda released this rather vague teaser image. Judging by its fastback body lines, long hood and lack of rear doors, it appears that Mazda is building another legendary sports car. Unfortunately, Mazda released the image with virtually no explanation, so we’ve only had our own assumptions to go by.
However, a Japanese magazine recently released these photos of what this car, dubbed the RX-9, will look like. Its sweeping bodylines and fastback style rear give off the impression of elegance; it’s really a pretty thing. The magazine also claims the RX-9 will be powered by an 800cc twin rotor rotary with an electric turbocharger boosting output to around 450hp. This is the same engine design that Mazda has claimed to have killed several times over. An elegant, fast, rotary powered coupe is a thought that’s bound to warm the hearts of petrol heads around the world, however when things appear to be too good to be true, they usually are. Forgive me for being a pessimist, but until I see a rotary under the hood of this new car, I’m not holding my breath. The car’s set to be unveiled at the Tokyo Motor Show, and we’ll be eagerly awaiting more details until then.
