Every so often I see a build that was so difficult, so expensive and so time consuming that it leaves me flabbergasted.
An American speed shop has been busy all summer doing the unimaginable. They took a late-model C63 AMG, separated the chassis from the drivetrain, and transplanted the body of a 190E Mercedes-Benz onto it. The car has all the running gear, right down to the massive AMG brakes and C63 dashboard, but now looks like a 1980s 190E.
Nobody has ever accused the C63 of being ugly and this example wasn’t even damaged; it was purchased straight from a dealer. That’s right; Piper Motorsports bought a brand new C63 AMG and immediately chopped it up. I can’t pinpoint an obvious reason for why this massive project was done, maybe weight reduction, maybe it was just 1980 nostalgia? Whatever the reason, I’m really glad they built it. I should mention that it’s not actually 100% complete yet. Piper Motorsports is calling it the “Frankenstein Mercedes”, we’re calling it the ultimate sleeper.
