Have you ever wondered how a crankshaft is machined from scratch?
Some time ago we wrote about different types of crankshafts and what their properties are, cast, forged, or billet. This vital engine component requires careful design and manufacturing, since even the lightest defect can cause catastrophic engine failure.
Naturally, strict tolerances and precise processes are what is required to manufacture a crankshaft. In this case, the work piece is a billet that is first mounted on a lathe chuck, then turned with various roughing tool to the different diameters, finishing tools refine the cut. then, the multi axis machine proceeds to shape the crankpins.
